HIP - Home Insulation, Pronto!

A major part of the new Home Information Packs (HIPS) will be the Energy Performance Certificate or EPC.

An EPC measures the energy efficiency of your house, as well as how much carbon it emits per year. It will consist of a two page report that grades your energy efficiency from A-G (with A being the highest and G the lowest rating), just as white goods are labelled in stores.

Crucially, this means potential buyers will be able to compare houses not just on the merits of double garage over en suite shower, but on how much they will cost to heat.

Clearly there are ways of maximising your home `s energy efficiency before the HIP inspector puts a foot through the door. And it makes good sense to do so, because installing cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and draught proofing will not only get you a good EPC when you come to sell your home, it `ll save you money on your fuel costs until you do.

Friends of the Earth and the World Wildlife Fund UK both back the HIP, saying anything that encourages homeowners to save energy and cut emissions is a good thing.
