Top Tips for an Energy Efficient Home
The cost of energy fluctuates all the time, but you can make a real difference to your heating bill by simply being more energy efficient in your home. Here are some tips on energy conservation:
- Turn your thermostat down. Reducing your room temperature by just 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10%, saving around £40 per year.
- Don't overheat your hot water. Cylinder thermostats shouldn't need to be set higher than 60°C/140°F.
- Close your curtains as soon as it gets dark. This will prevent cold air coming in and warm air escaping through windows.
- Always turn the lights off when you leave a room.
- Don't leave appliances on standby or on charge unnecessarily.
- If you don't have a full load, use the half-load or economy programme on washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers.
- Fix dripping taps. A dripping hot water tap wastes enough water in one week to half fill a bath.
- Use energy saving light bulbs. Just one can save you £100 over the lifetime of the bulb - and they last up to 12 times longer than ordinary light bulbs.
